Update from the January 24, 2012 BOE meeting for the Jr/Sr High School:
Shelley Fleischmann, Director of Special Services spoke about the District Plan for Educating Students with Disabilities 2010-2012. Approximately 12% of the Edgemont population falls in this category. The department will continue to review all areas of special education with particular attention to the following five areas:
1. Modified - integrated classes
2. Integrated sections in grades 7-12
3. Rotation of integrated science classes
4. Implementing consultant teacher direct services in select subjects and grades
5. Evaluating integrated reading classes in elementary school
The District Plan for Educating Students with Disabilities is posted on the district website and can be downloaded here. The BOE will vote on adapting the District Plan for Educating Students with Disabilities on February 14. If there are any questions please contact Shelley Fleischmann at 472-7769 or email to sfleischmann@mail.edgemont.org
The special education proposed budget for 2012-2013 will be $2,387,704 down from $2,700,046 last year. This does not include instructional salary codes nor district-wide teacher aides. The department will likely excess one special education teacher, one teaching assistant and perhaps some teacher aides.
The February 7 meeting is the Board of Education Study Session at which the Administration first presents its proposed spending plan to the BOE
Although all the variables are not yet known, Edgemont will likely not be able to provide a budget that maintains all existing programs and personnel and remains within the maximum allowable tax levy. Under the tax levy limit, the budget development process for 2012-2013 has been accelerated. The District must provide information to the Office of the State Comptroller by March 1, 2012. As a result, Budget study sessions are planned for February.
The BOE approved PTSA gift's for eChalk access fees for parent accounts and for the Konan Exchange Program.
Edgemont is proud to have two students qualify as INTEL 2012 Science Talent Search semifinalists. We congratulate Alex Bhandari-Young and Apoorva Talanki.

THANK YOU!
THANK YOU to the many families that contributed to the Winter Faculty and Staff Luncheon Friday, December 9. It seems as if we had more desserts than ever this year! Whether it was donating a dessert, helping with set up, serving, or clean up or cooking and shopping for the event, your participation is so greatly appreciated. The following is from a thank you email from one of our teachers,
"It is with both pride and pleasure that we tell new faculty members about the special treat from our parent group that awaits them. Once again, you have dazzled us with a thoughtfully-developed and skillfully-crafted menu! Several people commented on how this year's luncheon seemed particularly to hit just the right note. Thank you to all who were involved"
We want everyone to know how the teachers and staff appreciate the small things we do for them. Thank you again and let's continue to thank the teachers and staff for all they do for our children every day.

COMMUNITY NEWS
NextG Public Hearing
The public hearing re: NextG Network's application to place antenna's around town will not be held this Wednesday evening. The hearing will be rescheduled for Tuesday, February 7th at 7:30 PM at Greenburgh Town Hall. The February meeting will be held on Tuesday evening, not Wednesday evening.
The public hearing related to NextG Network’s application for Special Permits from the Town Board to provide cell phone, WiFi and other services to areas where gaps in service currently exist is being adjourned from Wednesday, January 25th to February 7th, 2012 to provide additional time for the Town’s consultants, HDR Engineering, to examine the technical feasibility of NextG relocating its DAS Antenna Systems, using Radio Frequency (RF) technology, to nonresidential areas. NextG has previously appeared at numerous Antenna Review Board (“ARB”) meetings and participated in several site visits, during a review process that commenced in 2009, and believes that the issue of whether coverage could be provided to customers by locating facilities outside of residential districts has been definitively demonstrated to the ARB in compliance with Section 285-37 of the Town Code. Nevertheless, NextG has agreed to provide additional documentation to the Town Board and its consultants to continue its review of the application and to investigate the possibility of relocating three (3) of the proposed systems to alternative locations along the Central Avenue Mixed-Use District.
Significantly, the Federal Telecommunications Act of 1996 prohibits state and local governments from regulating the placement of wireless service equipment based on concerns about the environmental effects of RF emissions and there are several federal cases that substantiate this. Any attempts to deny Special Permits to NextG using health concerns or Radio frequency emissions as a basis could be the source of costly and indefensible litigation.
The public hearing on NextG Networks of NY's proposal for placing Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) on existing utility poles in Greenburgh neighborhoods, including many areas of Edgemont will be held at the Greenburgh Town Hall, 177 Hillside Avenue, on Tuesday, February 7 Town Board Meeting at 7:30pm. Attendance by Edgemont residents is encouraged. For more information check the ECC Facebook page. Anyone wishing to speak at this meeting should call the Town Clerk’s office at 993-1501 in advance.
